Applesauce in one of the easiest foods to make, and the results are AMAZING! Because it is so easy to make, you can still do it when you are feeling lazy and want a yummy treat. You can also experiment with different types of apples, different levels of ripeness, or using pears. This is definitely a snack that you can make your own and enjoy in many ways.

First, you want to peel your apple. Leaving the peel on the apple is okay, but if you do this, then you will want to blend it all up really well at the end to avoid a weird texture. Then, cut up your apple into about 12 pieces or so. This isn’t an exact science, but you basically just want the apples in small pieces so that they cook faster and more evenly.

Next, put your prepared apples in a pot and fill with water to where you have about three-quarters of the apples covered. Partially, cover your pot with the lid and bring the water to a boil. Stir every now and again to make sure all of the apples are cooking evenly. In the pot, you could have also added a stick of cinnamon or some lemon juice or something else that adds additional flavour. I personally add ground cinnamon when blending… and more at the end.

Once you are able to slice through a piece of apple fairly easily (for example, with your spatula; aka, not with a sharp knife), then take the pot off the heat. Next, you can either use a hand blender or you can transfer them to a standing blender and blend there. Be careful while you blend, as the apples and water are very hot. This is when I like to add some cinnamon and maybe a spritz of lemon juice to evenly distribute throughout. You can decide how chunky or smooth you want your apple sauce. Leaving some chunks in there is especially delicious if you plan to eat the applesauce warm.

At this point, you’re all done. You can savour it as is, warm or cold, add it to your overnight oats, top a pancake with it, etc. My grandmother taught me how to make this when she was preparing potato pancakes for us… applesauce is much more versatile than people give it credit, so get creative and enjoy!
